Uk Insurance Query! Lending My Car To My Boyfriend While I’m Abroad? Insurance Question!!?

Hi there
In a couple of weeks I am going to France for my year abroad with my uni. I’ll be there till about July. For my boyfriend to be able to afford to come and c me every month, he is going to sell his car and therfore not have to pay a loan back monthly…
So he asked to use my car for a year. The only thing is, my family r saying its a silly idea cause we are both third party.. (Im 22and he is 26) and if he crashes I will lose my car(if it is his fault)
What should I do, then in these circumstances? Do I have to put the car in his name or something?
If Im not insured on the car for a year do I lose my no claims?

I have just added my son as a named driver on my insurance, he is 25. It cost an extra £42, but its money well spent. He has his own insurance to drive any car with the owners permission but its only covered for 3rd party. If he had an accident I would be without a car. Have a look at comparison sites and find a good quote for fully comprehensive insurance.

Your family do have a point. Why not allow your BF to use your car on the proviso that he uprates his insurance to Full Comp, Or check whether he would be comprehensively insured as a named driver on your insurance and uprate your own insurance to Fully comp. On your second question, some companies will hold NCD for two years, others only one so you need to contact the company, not the broker .

Why not have your car insured as fully Comp and put both your names on it?
If you pay outright instead of monthly then you can get it just as cheaply as 3rd party.
Trawl the insurance quote sites and have a good luck, it’s always worth it and you’ll both get to use the car that way.

Hi, you can do a joint policy for you and your boyfriend on the 1 car, it should be a simple call to your current insurer and a payment for the remainder of the term of YOUR insurance, then when your’s runs out just apply together.

You can have another NAMED driver on your ins. and as he is over age25 it will probabley be cheaper than yours,BUT, remember, 3rd party ins, could leave you with nothing.Shop around for Comprehensive cover to be safe.

As long as he is a sensible driver then being third party shouldn’t matter. I have third party, fire and theft insurance adn when my boyfriend and I decided to cut down to one car, he sold his and canceled his insurance on it, we kept my car insured in my name because I had a couple of years no claims discount and he was a fairly new driver and then got him added to my insurance policy. It was an additional £18 for 6 months.
Why dont you just do that???
If he was happily driving his own car thrid party then why should it make a difference if he drove yours??!?!
