What Would Be A Great Tuner Car?

Okay, so I’m looking for a car that can be modified performance wise and will not jack up the price of my insurance so much since I’m still somewhat young. So far I have a clean driving record because I only race on the tracks and have no violations. (To those who think I’m gonna use it for street racing) I live in the U.S. so it has to be a car that we have here in the states.
I’m more partial to imports than Domestics so it would be great if you could name a few.
It has to be a car that can be driven daily (reliable) but also has some kick to it whenever I need it and take it to the track or auto-cross (I love to tune cars so it wouldn’t be a problem if I have to tune it to make power). A car with decent mileage would be great because I don’t want to be filling up the tank every time I move an inch. Finally, It has to fit within a budget of $5,000 or less.
I know a lot about cars, I’m an automotive technician but I want to see what you guys and girls think.
So please name a few cars and elaborate as to why you choose it.
Thank you.
P.S. Key points: Reliable, Cheap, Fun, can be made *somewhat* fast, won’t jack up my insurance (Somewhat of a sleeper). Oh and emphasis on the Domestic cars would be great.
:)

reliable, cheap, fun, good insurnace (compared to other sports cars), sounds like a mazda miata! these things are cheap, handle amazing. they don’t have much power, but you can put on a turbo kit. you can find a lot under 5 grand.
nissan 240sx is also pretty cheap.

you want it to get good mpg look good be good at steering be fast reliable and under 5000? is that even possible?
the only cars i can think of that come even slightly close would be an old eclipse a 3000gt VR4 and an old camaro. but some may be a bit over 5000 and not crazy reliable. maybe you need to up your budget cause 5000 with all those good requirements is like trying to buy a mansion with ten dollars… not gonna happen
the best car under 15000 id say is the supra :D
