What Is The Process For Auto Body Repairs?
I took a turn too tightly in my garage now I have major damage. I went to the dealer to get an estimate for how much it would be to fix it and it’s really high. I want to look at getting it done at an auto body shop, which I hope will be cheaper; I also found someone on Craig’s list that does auto repair. This is the first time I’m doing this, so what should I know? What should I be aware of? What’s the procedure. If I get a quote from an auto body repair shop or from an individual, is that quote the only price I’m supposed to pay? What if the actual work costs more, what percentage of the quote can it go over? If I go with a private person off of the internet, what should I do to ensure that he won’t just steal my car and I won’t hear from him again.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m totally lost.
I am also not going through my insurance, but paying out of pocket.

My best advice to you would be to look for a body shop that has a good reputation, ask around. Body repairs are very expensive, I should know, I write estimates for them all day, so don’t be surprised if the repair costs are in the thousands of dollars, depending on the damage. Make sure that when your estimate is written that they do a very thorough job, making sure that any hidden damage may be accounted for, that way you won’t be surprised with an additional bill. I know that our shop will give our cash paying customers a discount on the repairs, ask the shop you choose if they give discounts to cash paying customers.
I hope that this is helpful to you, if you have more questions please feel free to contact me, jessica@clinecollisioncenter.com

Dealers and independent shops use a guide book that estimates time and materials cost. The proper procedure is laid out so the quality and extent of work should be similar. You can talk to some body shop chains like Maaco or similar. Depending on the extent of damage, used parts may save money as would just filling the dent with epoxy. I would avoid Craig’s list and friends as you may not be happy with the quality and time frame of the completed job with no recourse.
Remember the saying “If you think a professional is expensive, try an amateur and see how much it costs to redo their repair job.”
