The absolutely CHEAPEST car insurance is on the
Ford Taurus… new or used! They are obviously safe because auto insurance rates are based on # of accidents, $ spent on accidents, cost of parts, likliness of being stolen…etc…
2nd is the Honda Civic (NOT a sport model)
3rd is the Honda Accord (again NOT a sporty model)
They also have great gas mileage!
As for SAFEST!!! I recently had a client who had a fatal car accident (lost his daughter in a Ford Focus) he researched this & replaced all of his vehicles with Dodge Calibers..
For safety – avoid the Ford Focus.. and Saturns (all of them)
The worst vehicles (based on insurance rates) Mitsubishi Montero and Nissan Pathfinder!!! If you’re looking at 2 or 4-door vehicles Mitsubishis and Nissans seem to be more expensive to insure
As for FAST… I think @ 17yo you shouldn’t be thinking about fast

OK, fast cars aren’t cheap to buy, cheap to insure, don’t get good gas milage, and aren’t safe.
Take out the fast. Go get a 10 year old Dodge Caravan. They’ve got relatively low insurance rates. Basically any car that’s PAID FOR, will be cheap, if you only carry liability on it – even a fast car, as there isn’t any coverage for the car itself.

You need to do some preliminary research on sites like edmunds.com & kbb.com to get an idea of facts like crash ratings, fuel effeciency, suggested price, etc. Believe me, going purely on suggestions is one thing, but doing the search yourself is a treat to your adrenaline…
Ok, here’s my go. Had I been 17, looking for fast car, I would rather compromise a bit on mileage and insurance… Go for a Mustang. If money is a concern, go for a slightly older model than what you can afford and use that extra money to pay the difference of insurance and mileage.
Believe me, you will have enough time to worry later about the effeciency and insurance in life… This is the TIME for you to go out and rock…
One way to save few bucks is to buy from a private party rather than going to a dealer… keep on checking for craigslist and other such sites…

Buy a fuel-efficient used compact like a Honda Civic. You’ll save on gas and insurance. Forget the “fast” stuff. And go talk to an insurance agent or two to get rough quotes first, so you’ll know what kind of cost you’re facing. Too many young people buy the car, then can’t afford the insurance.

Chevy Cavalier if you’re looking for something affordable and used. It’s actually not a bad looking car either. =]
Cheapest insurance in my opinion would be Nationwide. Geico and All State rape you.

I have to agree with the Taurus recommendation. This is a full size vehicle with good crash ratings. There were a ton in rental and lease fleets so they are cheap. You can pick up one with about 75000 miles (3-4 years old) for about $5k.
