Can You Lease A 2006 Car And Not Have Some Kind Of Auto Insurance In The State Of Michigan?
my daughter leased a 2006 suv in michigan and somehow she did not have auto insurance on it when she hit a tree – is it possible to lease a car and not have some type of coverage by the driver or the dealer in the state of michigan.

Michigan insurance is set up oddly. If I remember correctly, the way it is set up is that each driver is responsible for any damage to their own cars if an accident occurs. As such, if she does not have coverage of some sort, she will just have to cover the cost of repairs out of pocket.
However, I’m pretty sure that some sort of coverage is mandatory.

I would think that the lessors would have some coverage on their investment. Check the lease contract; I’m sure any details would be included therein. Good luck!

It is against the law to drive a car in Michigan without insurance. If the dealer knowingly let her leave without it there could be some (but not all) responsibility on their part. If she transferred plates from another car that had full coverage insurance, the insurance transfers too for 10 days. If she had insurance and let it expired, she’s in deep do do.
