Can I Get Renters Insurance With The Company My Parents Use For Auto If I Don’t Live With Them?
I’m still under my parents auto policy for car insurance, but I live on my own now in the same state. The auto insurance company we use sells renters insurance too. Can I get a renters policy through them to save on my rate even though I’m on my parents auto policy? I don’t want to get in trouble on my auto policy since I’m not living with my parents anymore.

Any renters policy will be separate from the auto policy. You won’t be able to save. Renters insurance is not that expensive – just get it on your own.

What is the address you are using on your parents auto policy? If you are showing their address then you may want to consider going to a different company for the renter’s insurance.
I know with my company, my kids started out on my policy and have since branched to their own policy. If they had not started out on ours they would not have qualified (USAA – military insurance). Since they ‘have the in’ they now have their own auto insurance with them and will be able to get any other policy they offer.
Might want to check for a price quote of your own through your parents company. My son’s insurance actually dropped lower on his own than on ours (no clue how that could be but it did). Then you will have ‘your in’ and can then get the renter’s insurance after that. Most companies give price breaks when you have more than one type of policy with them.
Good luck on which ever you do.

Why not be honest and change your address to where you are really living. Take the renters insurance with the same company so you can get the multi-line or multi-policy discount. You will probly get to keep most of the discounts that you had with your parents anyways, maybe except multi car discount unless you have a second car.

No, as then you will have to change your auto insurance. Although depending on your age, you should look into getting your own set of policies, as it will give you a discount on your own.

If you mean you don’t want your parents insurance Co. to know you are living on your own then you should use another insurance Co. How much stuff can a person who still uses their parents policy own, that needs insurance?
