What Do I Do If An Insurance Company Sends Me A Check For More Than It Costs To Repair My Car?
I was involved in an auto accident that was the other driver’s fault. Their insurance company’s appraiser estimated the cost to be higher than the repair shop quote, and they never asked to see the quote. The claims rep just said that this was the amount that they were willing to pay for the repair. I gave them the name of the shop I was using. I picked my car up today, and paid with my own money, because I don’t know what to do about the overage. I would like to deposit their check, and reimburse them, if necessary. I don’t want to send the check back and have to wait on another one. I don’t know if them sending me the check is standard practice. I also wonder if the repair had cost more, if I would have been responsible for it once I cashed the check. It says full and final payment on it.

Good Karma indeed. You get a little extra to have some fun with. Seriously, it’s yours to keep. It rarely happens that you get more than you need from an insurance company. I should know, I work for one!

there’s no problem here, because you chose to except the insurance companies estimate. the money is yours, PERIOD. you did nothing wrong.
let me tell you a story. a woman drifted through a stop sign as i was entering the intersection, forcing me off the road, in turn i had to jump over a large concreat curb wich tore up my oil pan, and tires and rims.
the car was not drivable because of the oil pan. police came and the women addmited running the stop sign, but at least she stayed on the secene to give her information.I HAD THE SAME INSURANCE AS SHE. I had the car towed to the only garage i ever go to. the insurance company sent out THEIR REP to access the damage, wrote up their estimate and left it with manager of the garage. i talked to the manager of the garage and he said he would fix the car for the ESTIMATED QUOTE that was given to him by the insurance companies rep. i NEEDED my car back as soon as possible, it”s my only means oof transportattion, so i told the manager to fix the car and i would pay him cash, then i would get the money back from the insurance company. now remember it was their estimator who gave the price. the manager fixed my car withing two days and got me back on the road. i sent the bill for the repairs, using their reps estimate, for the exact amount paid and a copy of the bill i paid. about a month later the insurance company sent me a check for $200.00 less than i paid. i was furious, so i called them up and told them this wasn’t right, i even sent a letter to the insurance companies manager, his reasoning for paying less was that it was a very generious offer BECAUSE THE WOMAN’S CAR NEVER HIT MY CAR.
end of conversation. I of course left that insurance company found a different insurance company and bought a policy for $200.00 LESS than the other company was charging me. take the money and that will be the end of it. you actually didn’t even have to fix your car if that’s what you decided. so long as you accept their payment as payment in full that’s all they’ll care about. good luck to ya.

You got lucky normally they try and short you if your a honest person you call and say there’s some kind of mistake. But if your like hurting for some cash they will never notice you got off man, personal preference.Dont worry about them finding out they just cut a check assuming the damages would less. The write a fair judgment time spent getting quote, maybe a rental car for when yours in in the shop… Take it as good karma.
